After what has been a seven year wait, local hardcore heroes King Ly Chee have finally released their third long player Time Will Prove. Their cd release party was held at HangOut on a Saturday night before the end of January.
Opening for King Ly Chee was WuHan punk band SMZB (生命之餅). Their music style was rooted in old school punk, but the addition of the violin and bagpipes spiced things up a bit. Their set wasn’t very long, but the band gave it their all, and was surely a treat for concert goers to get a taste for bands from the mainland. After SMZB, the audiences were referred to the big screen hanging left side of the stage. The video shown was a short and funny mini documentary showing what King Ly Chee did in preparation for the show. This was a refreshing change from the usual waiting time for band setup in between sets. I am also aware that this is a luxury though, seriously, how many locations can afford a 200 plus inch monitor!
The band everyone has been waiting for stormed the stage after around a 15 minute wait, it was probably a huge moment for long time fans, since this was what they had been waiting for all these years. King Ly Chee pretty much went through the whole Time will Prove cd, along the way adding in fan favorites such as Refuse (拒絕) and 土炮. Of course, no KLC concert would be complete without mosh pits and circle dancing. It was actually encouraged evident by the demanding loud cries by lead singer Riz Farooqi. Between songs were charged story sharing by Riz, topics spanning racism to the local education system.
A personal highlight of the night was the playing of the song “Wrong in Mind” by Screw, and even asked Screw’s singer William to come up and join sing it. Riz had emphasized the importance of history and context for nurturing culture, and specifically music. You can’t build something new without remembering the past, and I couldn’t agree more.
